Examples from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s.
About 80 years have passed since the apogee of the Modern Movement in our country, but despite this, this recent period remains largely unknown. The topic is relatively well studied, but despite this, the valuable buildings are not well known to the general public, and sometimes – even to the researchers themselves.
Through our work on the Facebook page “Bulgarian Modernist Architecture” we discovered that there is still a great interest in this architecture. Over the course of several years, we researched the history of the included buildings – when the building was designed and built, who its architect was, who the first and subsequent owners were, its original functions, and more. Our goal was to find reliable information on these issues – we researched archives, local and national periodicals, books and various scientific works, conducted field research. We met with the current owners of various buildings, heard their living stories and memories, talked about their attitude towards their property, how they perceive it, how they take care of it, etc. We tried to discover why some buildings today receive adequate care, while others lose their identity, and how we can work so that these valuable architectural monuments are preserved in their authentic beauty for generations. Despite our research, some of the buildings included in the exhibition still have unknown architects, years of design, and other data.
