For me, Vitosha is the most charming and vital geographical feature associated with Sofia. It is a natural wealth and a living environment. Every morning I wake up with its silhouette in front of the window and we are recharged by the play of light and the change of seasons on its slopes. I turn it into a porcelain vase. It is an object that connects us to the beauty of plants and allows us to bring a piece of nature into the interior.
When I chose to work on Vitosha, I realized that everyone in Sofia perceives Vitosha according to where they see it from. The silhouette is very diverse, so I decided to use the geographical map as a reference for the mountain’s relief. I created the prototype of the vase based on the topographic map of Vitosha, simplifying the contour lines and using them as horizontal levels for building the shape. I used the method of creating relief maps, but much more generalized. Vector graphics became a good basis for creating a 3D model, which was realized through 3D printing. Thus, the prototype of the vase appeared.
For the 3D printing of the prototype, ABS plastic was used because it allows for precise printing, long-term use and easy storage of the prototype. For the molds – plaster, and for the final product I used the classic technology of casting and firing porcelain.
Porcelain with its characteristics has been the ideal material for creating everyday vessels for centuries. Each vase is made by us in the tochka & tochka studio.
Vitosha Vase participates in the “Sofia for Home” souvenir project.
